Hearing Jesus: A Guide to Living a Missional Life

Have you ever found yourself yearning to hear Jesus’ voice more clearly in your life? It’s a common desire for those of us striving to live a missional life, aligned with the unique purpose God has for us. Hearing Jesus isn’t just about catching a divine whisper during a quiet moment; it’s about cultivating a life that is attuned to His presence and guidance every day.

Cultivating a Listening Heart

One of the first steps to hearing Jesus is cultivating a heart that listens. In a world filled with noise and distractions, we need to create space for stillness. Psalm 46:10 says, "Be still, and know that I am God." This stillness isn’t just about physical quiet; it’s about calming our inner turmoil and creating a mental space where Jesus’ voice can be heard.

Action Step: Dedicate a specific time each day to sit in silence, focusing on God. Start with just five minutes and gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable with the practice.

Knowing His Voice

Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Knowing His voice comes from spending time in His Word. The Bible is a direct line to God’s thoughts and heart. When we immerse ourselves in Scripture, we start recognizing the tone and content of His voice.

Action Step: Incorporate daily Bible reading into your routine. Choose a book of the Bible to study deeply, allowing its truths to sink into your heart and mind.

Prayer: A Two-Way Conversation

Prayer is often seen as us talking to God, but it’s also a vital way to hear from Him. Approach prayer as a conversation where you not only speak but also listen. Ask Jesus to speak to you, and then wait expectantly.

Action Step: After praying, take a few moments to sit quietly and listen. You might not hear an audible voice, but pay attention to thoughts, scriptures, or impressions that come to mind.

Discerning His Guidance

Sometimes hearing Jesus means discerning His guidance through circumstances and wise counsel. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety." God often uses the people around us and the situations we face to communicate His will.

Action Step: Seek out godly mentors and friends who can provide wise counsel. Be attentive to how God might be speaking through them.

Embracing a Missional Life

Living a missional life means being intentional about aligning our daily actions with God’s purpose for us. When we actively seek to hear Jesus, we are better equipped to fulfill the mission He has set before us. This involves stepping out in faith, even when we only have a faint whisper of direction.

Action Step: Reflect on areas in your life where you feel Jesus is calling you to act. Take a small step of obedience today, trusting that He will guide you further as you move forward.

Questions to Consider and Pray About

  1. Am I creating enough stillness in my life to hear Jesus clearly?

  2. How can I incorporate more of God’s Word into my daily routine?

  3. In what ways can I make my prayer life more of a two-way conversation?

  4. Who are the people in my life that God might be using to guide me?

  5. What small step of faith is Jesus calling me to take today?
